The implant guide: what actually matters in 2026

A plain-English walkthrough of what to ask, what to check, and what to ignore when considering a dental implant.

A dental implant is a titanium or zirconia screw placed into the jaw, a healing period of three to six months, and a ceramic crown on top. The science has not changed dramatically since 2000. What has changed is the planning, the hardware, and the margin for error.

What to ask

Ask for a written plan. Ask what brand of implant is going in and where it is manufactured. Ask for the warranty terms and what voids them. Ask how the maintenance programme works.

What to check

Check that a CBCT has been taken. Check that the surgeon is doing both the placement and the restoration, or is coordinating closely with the clinician who will. Check that impressions are digital.
